At the 4th International Conference on Energy Meteorology, Bari, 27 – 29 June 2017, Business of Weather talks to Dr. Florence Rabier, the Director-General of ECMWF, Andrea Steiner, Research Scientist, German Weather Service (DWD), Sue Ellen Haupt, Senior Scientist & Director, National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and Jonas von Schumann, German Weather Service (DWD)about the increasing accuracy of weather forecasting and what it means for such areas as renewable energy, climate change prediction, etc.

About the participants:

Dr. Florence Rabier, Director-General of ECMWF
Dr. Rabier is an internationally recognised expert in Numerical Weather Prediction, whose leadership has greatly contributed to delivering major operational changes at both ECMWF and Météo-France. Dr Rabier has been the Director-General of ECMWF since January 2016, after two years leading the Centre’s Forecast Department. Her career so far has taken her back and forth between Météo-France and ECMWF.

Andrea Steiner, Research Scientist, German Weather Service (DWD)
Ms Steiner is a research scientist at the German Weather Service (DWD) within the department for meteorological analysis and modelling since 2013. Her research activities contribute to multi-lateral cooperation projects with the energy sector, where DWD aims at improving its numerical weather models for Renewable Energy applications. Her focus is on short range forecasts of hub height wind speeds as well as on dispersion modelling of mineral dust that is influencing the photovoltaic power production in Germany.

Sue Ellen Haupt, Senior Scientist & Director, National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)
Dr. Haupt is a Senior Scientist and Director of the Weather Systems and Assessment Program with the Research Applications Laboratory of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) She also serves as a Councilor for the American Meteorological Society and is an expert in meteorology applied to renewable energy.

Jonas von Schumann, German Weather Service (DWD)
